There are many myths about coaching, integrative therapy, and how it works online, so I’ve put together this list of FAQs to help you sort through the basics of coaching and integrative therapy and what you can expect from working with me. What exactly is coaching?

The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” A professional coaching partnership between a qualified coach (me) and an individual (you) facilitates concrete changes and ultimately results. You will focus on your skills, perceptions and behavior to actualize your potential, improve your performance, and create focus and directional clarity. We will together work on your personal and professional goals, and enhance the quality of your life. In the coaching I do with my clients, I focus on three pillars fundamental to any major evolution in life: clarity, confidence, and courage.

Who is coaching for?

People from all walks of life can benefit from coaching, but it tends to resonate best with individuals who aspire to improve their lives or reach a higher level of self-awareness and personal success, those feeling some sort of tension in their careers or lives. If you’re stuck in a rut, frustrated with some aspect of your life, wrestling with a major transition, or simply aspire for more out of your life, coaching is right for you. Most of my clients who get the most out of coaching tell me they’re looking for 4 things: 1. A dedicated time & space to focus on some important life issues 2. A growth in self-confidence and self-love 3. Someone who can hold them accountable to making progress 4. Someone who can be fully objective and nonjudgmental when discussing topics Coaches can help hold you accountable, to keep you on track toward achieving your goals.

How do I know coaching is working for me?

Obviously you can't change your entire life in 60 minutes, but at the end of each coaching session, either with me, or another coach, I’d encourage you to ask yourself if you have learned something new about yourself and gained clarity on your situation. While I would never claim that coaching can lead to immediate epiphanies, I do believe you should feel like you’re gaining more clarity on your situation, personal empowerment and motivation to move forward with each progressive session. You should feel like you’re connecting the dots and gaining a new awareness about yourself, to enable new actions and new results in your life.

What makes Janina Schick unique?

In all my sessions and regardless of the modality, I see you as the multi-dimensional human being you are, bod, mind, emotions, spirit all interconnected.

My holistic background shows in my sessions, and also my own personal story of overcoming panic attacks and low self-esteem.
I have an open heart and mind with all my clients who trust me so much, to book sessions with me. I will give my all to guide you through changes and new beginnings, into a life with more confidence, self-love, and empowerment

How long do people work with you?

This totally varies, but in general, it takes multiple sessions to create meaningful progress. I’ve found the clients of mine who get the most from the process, commit to certain goals they aim to achieve over a 3-6 months period, as significant change doesn’t happen overnight. Given demand, I now only take on a limited number of new clients, specifically those interested in my most popular 20-session, 6 months package, although some continue beyond this or choose to move more quickly. From the start, I encourage all my clients to let me know if and when they feel their time is complete. I want you to feel like you’re getting tremendous value from every single session we have together, and the moment that’s not the case, you always have the freedom to stop.

Is online coaching as effective as offline coaching?

Absolutely. I wouldn’t let geography be the primary factor in finding the right coach. I’m based in Costa Rica, but I’ve coached clients around the world, including those in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Philipines,, India, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Australia.

I welcome clients from anywhere in the world as long as you’re proficient in English.

What about confidentiality?

What happens in our sessions stays in our sessions. I fully understand the value of your trust, and take every precaution to safeguard it. I will provide you with a detailed description of the ethical code that governs every client-coach relationship I enter. This document not only places my standards before you in plain text, but also codifies my commitment to you, the client, and your progress.

What is the difference between coaching and counselling?

Counselling is a past-focused discipline, in which the counsellor identifies the reasons for the person’s feelings and behaviours and offers ways to handle a particular issue. Unfortunately, this often gives the client a label, e.g. “I’m depressed”, which they use to justify their actions and thereby limit their ability to change. Some clients come to me after experiencing counselling when they get tired of having reasons and excuses and want to move forward. In coaching, we do not dwell on the reasons, because we want to avoid this negative outcome. Instead, we focus on the future, because no matter what has happened in the past, any person can make it better and learn to achieve, grow and be happy.

What is Janina's approach?

The foundation of my coaching incorporates these primary styles: Transformation-oriented: Although change in individuals is often measured on a behavioral basis, real change happens below the surface on a deeper level. Cultivating self-awareness, recalibrating your observational perspectives, and promoting paradigm shifts can yield huge personal and professional dividends and deep change. When systemic change occurs, it allows for adaptive, not technical application. That, in turn, allows for more masterful navigation of the complexities of your relationships, career and life. Results-oriented: Whilst I very well understand that it is a process that will get you to your result, I am not attached to only one particular tool, technique or approach. This means that if something isn’t working, we will quickly apply a new strategy or approach. My primary style is empathic, emergent, iterative and results-oriented. Direct: Honest, crucial conversations, when appropriate, are met head-on without reservation. Holistic: Currently, we live in a world that encourages specialization, reductionism and separation. While I may focus my work in a very targeted way, my coaching approach and lens is holistic, integrative and systemic. I know that a change you make in one area often influences and impacts another. I understand that once the underpinnings of a particular challenge are unearthed and effectively dealt with, it can have a domino effect, positively impacting many areas of your life. Then, the result is real, lasting change, not a superficial Band-Aid fix.

What do you mean with Integrative Therapy?

I am not only a coach but also a therapist, using different forms of therapy, depending on my clients situation and needs, such as

  • Heart-Centered Therapy
  • Aromatherapy
I also work with holistic and integritive healing modalities, such as
  • Reiki (Distance-Reiki)
  • EFT-Tapping
  • Hynotherapy
  • Mindfulness Practices
I see the different modalities as tools in my toolbox. They all are beneficial but non modality is entirely complete, which is why I combine them intuitively and skilfully to provide you with a holistic and integrative approach to your healing and personal growth.

How is Reiki a holistic approach to my well-being?

Reiki is a complimentary and not an alternative to your current medical plan. It is recommended that you continue with any medications you have been prescribed and continue to see your medical practitioner, or other holistic practitioners, unless you first speak with them personally. Reiki works in harmony and compliments all other forms of therapy. Reiki Practitioner does not diagnose nor prescribe – nor does ethics or law allow them to. Babies, children & pregnant women can benefit immensly from Reiki. Reiki creates a soothing and comforting environment for the whole family. Most children are very open to the loving energy of Reiki and its endless possibilities and enjoy giving short treatments to themselves, their friends, family and pets. Reiki is very safe with no harmful side-effects.

My life is fine: Why should I work with a coach?

If you feel your life is fine, or okay and you wonder if or if not you should work with a coach, these benefits might show you, the huge benefit of a coaching process? 1. Gain clarity about what you want, and I mean REALLY want I see it very often, that people don't allow themselves to dream, to dream big! "I don't deserve that", or "Who am I to do..." are common limiting beliefs, preventing people from stepping iin their power, living their dream. Coaching will bring you clarity about what you want and how you want to get it. Becoming clear on who you want to become, what your passion and purpose is, and what is most important to you is the heart of coaching. Of course also the way to actually make this dream come true, overcoming obstacles along the way, staying accountable and moving forward. You don't need to have a "proble" in your life, in order to benefit from coaching. Maybe you just don't see your full potential just yet, holding yourself back. This will change, once you chose to work with me 2. Overcome obstacles, fear, and insecurities Most people run from their fears, and by doing so, don't live their full potential and don't embrace their uniqueness and passion. When working with a coach you will learn to recognize your fear and what lies beyond your fear, to that you can thrive and move forward towards your dreams 3. Improving confidence Improving confidence and developing an empowering self image are essential for success in the workplace, as well as physical health and in our intimate relationships. Know what we are worth, raise your standards and see yourself as someone who deserves the best out of life. That will empower you and fuel you towards your greatest goals 4. Someone to hold you accountable Being able to check in with a coach weekly is like having a best friend whose sole purpose is to help you succeed and hit whatever target you have set. Sometimes it is hard to find people in our lives who can honestly hold us accountable, all while cheering us on and motivating us throughout the whole process 5. Stay focused on what's important Once you've worked out what you want and need from your life, your coach is there to help you get clear about your specific goals and keep you focused on what's really important. It's easy to feel daunted by dreams that feel too big and out of reach or to be put off by mundane distractions, but a coach will help you break everything down and get focused on each individual step along your journey 6. To understand yourself better and identify blind spots One of the keys to unlocking your potential is gaining a clearer understanding of yourself, what makes you tick, and what blind spots might be holding you back. A coach can help you dig deeper into your own psyche and really analyse your strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement. Once you truly understand yourself, you can work on becoming the person you need to become, in order to achieve the success that you desire 7. Be fully present and become more mindful Life can be hectic, there’s no two ways about it. Most of us often feel like we never stop, and that we are speeding through life at a million miles an hour, especially if you have a particular goal or destination that you are striving toward. In doing this however, it is so very easy to miss one of the most important, and enjoyable parts: the journey. As a certified Mindfulness-Trainer, I love to incorporate mindfulness techniques into my approach, to help you bring yourself back to the present moment, when things feel too fast, or too big and check in on how you are feeling in this moment. It will also likely mean that you are better able to find joy in some of life’s simpler things that are happening in the here and now, as opposed to constantly thinking about and striving toward the big, future goals. 8. To train your brain into that winning mindset All athletes have coaches to train their bodies, but what really sets sporting champions apart is their winning mindsets. Mind over matter really does count - not only in sport but in work and life as well. If you want to win, you need to think like a winner - and a great coach will train your brain to do exactly that 9. Keep You Honest And Enable You To Re-Evaluate Your Thinking, Assumptions And Beliefs Each and every one of us have a set of ever-changing thoughts, assumptions and beliefs. And a lot of them! It’s part of what makes you ‘you’. And yet while some of these are a positive force and helpful in allowing you to be the best version of yourself, others can cause mental blocks, feelings of stuckness and ultimately prevent you from meeting your aspirations. Working with a life coach not only serves to make you more aware of these limiting beliefs, thoughts and assumptions that might be stopping you moving forward, but in the process of working with a coach as you begin to unpick these, you will also likely identify various strategies that allow you to not only challenge, but actually reframe these specific limiting thoughts that might be preventing your progress.
